Duane Stephenson, a renowned singer/songwriter, significantly influenced Jamaica’s music scene with his debut album From August Town in 2008 – the first of three albums released with VP Records – which revived the roots reggae genre with its profound lyrics and spirituality. His album featured notable tracks like a remake of Tyrone Taylor’s “Cottage In Negril” and the title track “August Town,” earning praise for its blend of romantic and social themes.
Following the album’s release, Stephenson performed at major Jamaican events like Reggae Sumfest and Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, and toured globally, winning acclaim and a growing fan base. In 2010, Stephenson released his second album Black Gold, a blend of personal growth and world observations, reflecting his experiences and musical evolution. The album Black Gold explores various themes, from global issues to romantic narratives, showcasing Stephenson’s versatile talent and social consciousness.
Before his solo career, Stephenson was the lead vocalist for the band To Isis for nearly a decade, where he honed his musical skills and style. Duane Stephenson’s work with producer Dean Fraser brought out his best performances, evident in both his debut album and Black Gold. An acclaimed artist with a global presence, Duane Stephenson was invited to perform at the White House in 2010, recognizing his contributions to music and social awareness. In 2014, he released Dangerously Roots with VP and Greensleeves Records.
