Tony Matterhorn’s “Dutty Wine” 2025 Remaster Set for Release on March 22

Tony Matterhorn’s “Dutty Wine” 2025 Remaster Set for Release on March 22

Nearly two decades after its debut, the dancehall anthem returns next Friday with a remastered release—just as a new viral dance trend brings it back to the spotlight.

One of the most well-known dance moves ever to come out of Jamaica is the relentless Dutty Wine. Comprised of an outlandish, whiplash-inducing set of moves, it was unleashed upon the world in the early 2000s and popularised by the song of the same name by soundclash veteran Tony Matterhorn in 2006. The song always gets a big forward anywhere it’s played—from dancehalls in Kingston to shebeens in Queens to soundsystem trucks at Notting Hill Carnival, Dutty Wine is still a guaranteed party starter. In 2025, VP Records are proud to shine the musical spotlight on this Carnival anthem once again.

A couple of prominent Jamaican dancers claim to be the originator of the Dutty Wine, including Mad Michelle, 2003’s Dancehall Queen competition winner, and Dyema ‘Attitude’ Grey, a trendsetting dancer in Montego Bay. One thing is for sure: Tony Matterhorn regularly performed in Montego Bay—more commonly known as Mobay—at the raucous ‘Skin Out’ events. One night, he noticed a new dance trend and quickly created a track to capture the vibrancy of those events. Utilising Stephen ‘Supa Hype’ Davis’s energetic “Smash” Riddim as the basis for his vivid lyrical imagery, he created one of the biggest dancehall tunes of the modern era.

The track quickly spread like wildfire and became the theme song to this new dynamic dance trend (even The Guardian featured a handy ‘How to Dutty Wine’ guide), which had also begun to gain notoriety due to its overly exuberant moves. At the time, the BBC reported: “The Dutty Wine, a new frenzied dance which originated in Jamaica, has as many tongues wagging as it has necks twirling. It’s the neck twirling—or attempts at doing that—by mainly young women, which has many people worried.” Dr. Winston Jadusingh, a doctor who practices in Jamaica, cautioned: “Essentially the body was not designed to undergo that type of stress.”

In recent times, the track has continued to be popular and has found a new global audience on social media. Now, in 2025, there is even a brand new, completely different dance to accompany Matterhorn’s Dutty Wine going viral on TikTok—proving that the track has lost none of its potency in the last nineteen years.

This new remastered edition and Dolby Atmos mix for 2025 includes the uncut raw version, clean mix, and instrumental piece.

It will be available on all digital platforms on March 22.
