Gaudi Shares New Album Jazz Gone Dub

Introduction by Don Letts

Gaudi’s latest album Jazz Gone Dub is a masterclass in genre fusion, seamlessly blending the improvisational essence of jazz with the heavy, atmospheric grooves of dub. Known for his eclectic approach to music production, Gaudi pushes the boundaries yet again, creating a sonic landscape that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly innovative.

It took four years to produce, compose, perform, record, mix, and dub this instrumental album, which features a standout lineup of musicians including David Hinds of Steel Pulse, Jah WobbleErnest Ranglin, and the legendary rhythm duo Sly & Robbie.

From the opening track, it’s clear that Jazz Gone Dub is not just a fusion experiment—it is a thoughtful exploration of the shared language between two rich musical traditions. Gaudi’s multi-instrumental work on piano, Hammond organ, glockenspiel, Fender Rhodes, and the Taisho harp creates a lush, textured backdrop that allows the guest musicians to shine without disrupting the album’s cohesive atmosphere.

The presence of reggae lineage is unmistakable. David Hinds’ guitar adds melodic warmth to “Bach @ Liszt (Bucket List)” and “Fragile Hands”, while Jah Wobble’s iconic bass groove anchors “Cool Jazztice”“Tokyo Subterfuge”, and again “Fragile Hands” with a meditative pulse.

Ernest Ranglin’s signature jazz guitar is a highlight on “Susceptible”, where his intricate lines weave through Gaudi’s swirling organ riffs over a rhythm laid down by Sly & Robbie. The result is a hypnotic interplay that is both complex and deeply groovy—a total revisitation of “Ernie’s Dub” from the 2023 album Havana Meets Kingston In Dub, fully reimagined here.

Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree makes his mark on “Deflated and Discombobulated”, while Sam Bergliter and Henri Defoe of African Head Charge bring avant-garde piano and guitar flourishes that twist the album’s narrative in surprising ways. Horseman’s dynamic drumming injects energy into “Dub Lu” and several other tracks, complementing Gaudi’s atmospheric melodies with his percussive flair.

Their contributions, alongside Tim Hutton’s brass on “Cool Jazztice” and Gavin Tate-Lovery’s sax and flute lines across much of the album—including “H.E.L.P (Happy Elephants Love Pistachio)”—add bright, punchy layers to the dub foundation while introducing a late-night jazz-club sensibility.

Despite the expansive cast, Gaudi remains the glue holding the album together. His production is meticulous yet organic, allowing each track room to breathe and evolve. Space, delay, and reverb—core elements of dub—are handled with care, giving the music a dreamy, immersive quality. Tracks like “Susceptible” and “Alabaster Moon” demonstrate his ability to balance atmosphere with rhythmic and melodic precision.

With Jazz Gone Dub, Gaudi has crafted an album that feels both timeless and forward-thinking—an inspired conversation between two musical worlds. Whether you come from the jazz side, the dub side, or simply appreciate masterful musicianship and inventive production, this album is essential listening.

It’s not just a fusion—it’s a dialogue, and Gaudi is the eloquent mediator guiding us through.
