Garnet Silk, born Garnet Damion Smith, was a highly influential reggae artist whose career, though tragically brief, left a lasting impact on the genre. Initially recording under the name Bimbo in the 1980s, Silk made fewer than 10 recordings before rebranding himself as Garnet Silk in the early 1990s. His career, spanning from 1990 to 1994, marked a significant pushback against the prevailing ‘slackness’ in reggae, steering the genre back towards its traditional roots.
Silk’s breakout single, “Fill Us Up With Your Mercy,” produced by King Jammy in 1990, marked the beginning of his rise in the reggae scene. His single “Zion In A Vision,” released on VP Records’ Gold Disc label, demonstrated that culturally driven lyrics could still dominate dancehall music. Silk’s influence extended to other artists, notably inspiring renowned emcees like Buju Banton and Capleton to embrace a new spiritual direction in their music.
During his lifetime, only two LPs were released: It’s Growing (1992) produced by Bobby Digital, and Love Is The Answer (1994) produced by Steely & Cleeve, both on VP Records. Garnet Silk’s life and promising career were abruptly ended by a tragic fire in Mandeville in December 1994, but his legacy continues through posthumous albums and a dedicated fan base.
