Becca Dudley is a TV and Radio Presenter, DJ and the founder of Reggae platform DEADLY.
Becca began her career in 2012, when MTV signed her to be the new face of MTV UK. Over the course of her now 9-year career at MTV, Becca has fronted many of her own shows and hosted international shows such as the MTV EMA Live Red Carpet Show, MTV World Stage, whilst interviewing the who’s who in music.
VP:Â How did you get your start in the business?
BD:Â I sort of fell into TV Presenting – I used to model and my agent sent me to an MTV screen test. Luckily they were looking for a fresh face rather than a lot of experience! I couldn’t believe it when they called me back! Once I got the job at MTV, I worked hard to master my craft and began to front more and more shows over the years.
I come from a very musical family, and my mums Jamaican heritage was a big influence on what was playing in our household – Toots & The Maytals, Dennis Brown, Jimmy Cliff; so it was inevitable that I would become a DJ as I lived and breathed music. My friend taught me the basics (live in a club – nightmare!) and so I then bought myself a pair of decks and got to practicing. Eventually I started putting mixes online and a local radio station (Hoxton Radio) took a chance on me – that’s where I started spinning and interviewing reggae artists in 2013 and really learnt the basics!
VP:Â What was your first notable project?
BD:Â I interviewed Nicki Minaj in my first ever week of presenting which was pretty terrifying! MTV was an amazing training ground as they always threw me straight into the deep end. I still live my life putting myself out of my comfort zone and doing things that scare me, it’s the best way to grow!
VP:Â What are you working on now/ next?Â
BD: I’m putting a lot of time into my platform, DEADLY. I started it because I felt like there wasn’t really a video platform for Jamaican music in the UK, and I wanted to spotlight the culture in a new, more creative light. We recently signed a deal with Clarks Originals which is a dream come true; and were so excited for some big collabs coming this year – watch this space! We got back from Jamaica last month where we shot some amazing interviews and sessions with the hottest talent, it will be dropping very soon!
