Sugar Minott, born Lincoln Barrington Minott in 1956 in Kingston, Jamaica, was a highly influential reggae artist and producer. He began his musical journey in the 1970s as a member of the African Brothers before launching a successful solo career. Minott’s smooth and precise vocal delivery paired with his socially conscious lyrics set him apart in the reggae scene.
In the early 1980s, Sugar Minott signed with VP Records. This collaboration produced several iconic albums that showcased his versatility and talent. One of his notable albums with VP Records is “Ghetto-ology,” released in 1980, which addressed pressing social issues through his music.
Another significant work is the album “With Lots of Extra,” released in 1983, which demonstrated Minott’s adeptness in various reggae sub-genres, including roots reggae and dancehall. Throughout his career, Sugar Minott consistently delivered hits like “Good Thing Going” and “Herbsman Hustling,” contributing to the cross-over attention given to the genre.
Sugar Minott’s impact extended beyond his role as a performer as he played a pivotal role in nurturing emerging talent through his record label, Black Roots. His commitment to preserving reggae’s roots and uplifting messages earned him a lasting legacy in the genre.
