Born Richell Bonner in Kingston, Jamaica, Spice grew up in a family deeply rooted in reggae, with his brothers Pliers, Spanner Banner, and DJ Snatcher Dogg, all having successful music careers. He began his career with singles like 1994’s “Killing a Sound,” and his debut album in 1996, “Out of the Blue,” produced by Clive Hunt, was a mix of roots reggae and dancehall that gained popularity.
Spice’s early career was marked by touring with artists such as Chaka Demus & Pliers and Rita Marley, and performing at major Jamaican festivals including Reggae Sunsplash. His sophomore album, Living Ain’t Easy, reissued as Universal in 1999, was followed by a series of singles, leading up to his third album, Spice In Your Life, in 2004, featuring hits like “Earth Run a Red.” He scored another hit with “Youths Dem Cold” in 2007.
