Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin Honored at the 2025 Jamaica Independence Gala in New York

Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin, co-founder of VP Records, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Jamaica Independence Gala, held on Saturday, August 23 at the New York Marriott Marquis.

Organized by the Consulate General of Jamaica, New York, led by Consul General Alsion Wilson, OD, in collaboration with the non-profit Jamaica Promise, the Gala returned this year under the theme “Party with a Purpose” to celebrate Jamaica’s independence, culture, and diaspora contributions.

Miss Pat was recognized for her pioneering work as a reggae music trailblazer and for building VP Records into the world’s largest reggae label. For more than six decades, she has guided the music’s journey from Kingston record shops and sound systems to international stages, cementing reggae’s place as a global cultural force.

The Gala also honored several other distinguished individuals, including reggae matriarch Rita Marley, business leader Adam Stewart, community advocate James Alston, entrepreneur Henry “Larry” Duffus, financier Gregory Fisher, educator Dr. Anthony Munroe, and banking executive Audrey Tugwell Henry.

Consul General Wilson praised the honorees, stating, “Each honoree has made a profound impact in their field and in the lives of others, exemplifying the very best of Jamaica and the best of friends of Jamaica. Their achievements – from pioneering Jamaican music on the world stage to transforming educational institutions and empowering communities – inspire Jamaicans everywhere. It was a privilege to recognize their contributions as we celebrated our nation’s independence.”

The evening featured performances by Skip Marley, Nadine Sutherland, Big Youth, and Sharon Marley, with Derrick Barnett & The Statement Band and Road International providing the music. Proceeds from the Gala will support scholarships, the Jamaica Cancer Society, and community development projects, including the Rita Marley Girl’s Center.
