Dubbed the Tuff Gong Takeover, Sunday July 9th was an evening of musical presentation that saw Reggae, Soca and Afrobeats sway music lovers at the Coney Island Amphitheatre. With live performances by Skip Marley, Patrice Roberts, and Sarkodie fans got their belly-full of great performances. The icing on the cake were live sets from Bobby Kinders and Jabba as well as ZJ Sparks from Jamaica.
How ZJ Sparks ignited the Caribbeans Diaspora in New York came down to her knowledge of all the islands and the variance in each countries brand of Soca and how its performed. Presenting music from Greneda, St. Lucia and Barbados, Sparkie gave the audience background information on the island, the name of the carnival associated with the island as well as the artists who are popular in that region. Included were anecdotes and stories about why fans of the genre should island-hop.
While making her presentation, Sparkie made sure to let fans know that some of the songs she was playing is available on Soca Gold 2023. If that is not enough, Sparks jumped into the crowd to enjoy the festivities with the fans who were fete-ing at the front of the stage.
